January 9, 2025·Claude CN Community·Tools·Claude Code, Plugin, Code Optimization, Agent

Introduction

The Claude Code team just open-sourced their internal code simplification Agent — code-simplifier. This intelligent tool focuses on enhancing code clarity, consistency, and maintainability while preserving all functionality and optimizing code structure.

Developer: Boris Cherny (@bcherny) - Claude Code Team Member
Release Date: January 9, 2025
GitHub: anthropics/claude-plugins-official

Installation

Method 1: Command Line Installation (Recommended)

Run in terminal:

claude plugin install code-simplifier

Method 2: Install in Claude Code Session

  1. Open Claude Code
  2. Enter the following commands:
/plugin marketplace update claude-plugins-official
/plugin install code-simplifier

After installation, you can invoke the code-simplifier Agent after long coding sessions or when cleaning up complex PRs.

Core Features

1. Preserve Functionality

Never changes code functionality - only changes implementation. All original features, outputs and behaviors remain intact.

2. Apply Project Standards

Automatically follows coding standards defined in the project’s CLAUDE.md:

  • Use ES modules with proper sorting and extended imports
  • Prefer function keyword over arrow functions
  • Use explicit return type annotations for top-level functions
  • Follow proper React component patterns and explicit Props types
  • Use correct error handling patterns (avoid try/catch when possible)
  • Maintain consistent naming conventions

3. Enhance Clarity

Simplify code structure by:

  • Reducing unnecessary complexity and nesting
  • Eliminating redundant code and abstractions
  • Improving readability through clear variable and function names
  • Consolidating related logic
  • Removing unnecessary comments that describe obvious code
  • Important: Avoid nested ternaries - use switch statements or if/else chains for multi-condition selections
  • Choose clarity over brevity - explicit code is often better than overly compact code

4. Maintain Balance

Avoid over-simplification that could:

  • Reduce code clarity or maintainability
  • Create overly clever solutions that are hard to understand
  • Combine too many concerns into a single function or component
  • Remove useful abstractions that improve code organization
  • Prioritize “fewer lines” over readability (e.g., nested ternaries, dense one-liners)
  • Make code harder to debug or extend

How It Works

code-simplifier uses the Claude Opus model, specifically trained for code optimization. Its workflow:

  1. Identify recently modified code segments
  2. Analyze opportunities for improving elegance and consistency
  3. Apply project-specific best practices and coding standards
  4. Ensure all functionality remains unchanged
  5. Verify refined code is simpler and more maintainable
  6. Only document significant changes that affect understanding

Agent Definition

name: code-simplifier
description: Simplifies and refines code for clarity, consistency, and maintainability while preserving all functionality. Focuses on recently modified code unless instructed otherwise.
model: opus

Use Cases

Case 1: Cleanup After Long Coding Session

After completing a feature:

# In Claude Code
Please use the code-simplifier agent to clean up my recently modified code

Case 2: Before PR Code Review

Before submitting a Pull Request:

# In Claude Code
Please use code-simplifier to optimize all code in this PR

Case 3: Refactor Complex Logic

When code becomes too complex:

// Before: Nested ternary operators
const status = user.active ?
  user.verified ? 'active-verified' : 'active-unverified' :
  user.suspended ? 'suspended' : 'inactive';

// After code-simplifier: Clear switch statement
function getUserStatus(user) {
  if (user.suspended) return 'suspended';
  if (!user.active) return 'inactive';
  return user.verified ? 'active-verified' : 'active-unverified';
}
const status = getUserStatus(user);

Best Practices

1. Focus on Recent Modifications

code-simplifier defaults to processing only recently modified or touched code, unless explicitly instructed to review a broader scope.

2. Configure Project Standards

Create CLAUDE.md in your project root to define team coding standards:

# Coding Standards

## Import Convention
- Use ES modules with explicit extensions (.js, .ts)
- Sort imports: external packages first, then local modules

## Function Patterns
- Prefer `function` keyword for top-level functions
- Use arrow functions for callbacks and inline functions

## Type Annotations
- All exported functions must have return type annotations
- Prefer explicit types over `any`

3. Autonomous Operation

code-simplifier can run autonomously and proactively, refining code immediately after it’s written or modified, without explicit requests.

4. Prioritize Readability

Remember: Explicit code beats compact code. code-simplifier follows this principle and won’t sacrifice readability to reduce line count.

Technical Implementation

code-simplifier is a standard Claude Agent using:

  • Model: Claude Opus (strongest reasoning capability)
  • Tools: Read, Edit, Glob, Grep (file operations and search)
  • Context: Project’s CLAUDE.md and recent git diff
  • Strategy: Iterative refactoring, focusing on one issue at a time

FAQ

Q: Will code-simplifier change code functionality?

A: No. This is code-simplifier’s core principle - only change implementation, not functionality. All original features, outputs and behaviors remain intact.

Q: Which programming languages does it support?

A: code-simplifier supports all major languages, especially excelling at:

  • TypeScript/JavaScript
  • Python
  • Go
  • Rust
  • Java

Q: Can I customize optimization rules?

A: Yes, define your team’s coding standards in a CLAUDE.md file in the project root, and code-simplifier will automatically follow them.

Q: Will it remove comments?

A: Only removes redundant comments describing obvious code. Valuable documentation comments and complex logic explanations are preserved.

Q: How do I undo code-simplifier changes?

A: Use git to revert: git checkout -- <file>. It’s recommended to commit code before running for easy comparison and rollback.
